Eight Basic Skills

There are eight basic skills that employers look for when hiring new employees. In most professions, prospective employees will usually meet only five or six of these at the most.
Nurses usually meet all eight of these skills, which is why nurses find that their skills transfer so well to other fields. This is also why employers will jump at the opportunity to hire a nurse to fill a non-nursing position.

These desired skills which nurses exhibit are:
  • Leadership or the ability to persuade others to follow
  • Problem solving
  • Team Work
  • Manual dexterity
  • Help Instruct/Teach others
  • Initiative
  • Public contact/networking
  • Physical stamina

Teachers, police officers, EMTs, and physical, occupational and recreational therapists are the other professions who usually meet all eight of these transferable skills.
